Mark Dion: Classical Mind

Through Mark Dions connection to the environment he is able to create a sculpture that represents the hierarchy of life. As he stated in the video humans are in the top of the kingdom of life. Within the sculpture he is creating he is setting up a stair like structure to put the different layers of the hierarchy on each level. I find this really interesting because I can physically see different aspects of life building off of each other. There are inanimate objects, minerals, sponge like figures, plants, and animals that are building up to the top which is humans. This stair case also has a small room underneath of it. Within the small room under the staircase there is a star gaze above. This is supposed to represent the entire universe.

I like how Mark includes this stare gazing room to his sculpture because this makes me think of life that we cannot see.I don't know his exact intentions, but looking at the outside you can see clear representations of life and on the inside of the sculpture you do not see representations of life but you can think about it.
